Guerilla guests

Today in class we will be joined by Andy Berndt and Caleb Barton from Street Factory Media – a local firm that focuses on street-level and guerilla-style marketing and identity campaigns. They have worked directly with many popular brands, including Polaroid and Powerball, as well as partnered with other agencies, including locally-based Colle McVoy, Weber Shandwick, and Olson. Andy is also the program director for Catalyst, a state-wide youth movement focused on educating young people to be active and effective health advocates. We welcome them and their feedback!

Rethinking the box

Media_httpwwwthedieli_ezrpt

It took 21 months of researching, brainstorming, and fabricating, but Puma and Yves Behar (of Fuseproject) have finally come up with a more sustainable solution for the shoebox. The shoebox, which will hit shelves next year, is estimated to "slash water, energy, and fuel consumption during manufacturing alone by 60%—in one year, that comes to a savings of 8,500 tons of paper, 20 million mega joules of electricity, 264,000 gallons of fuel, and 264 gallons of water." Furthermore, the elimination of a plastic bag will save "275 tons of plastic, and the lighter shipping weight will save another 132,000 gallons of diesel."

Great work, creative thinkers.

CS5 goes live!

From icons to splash screens, to packaging and feature videos, the Adobe CS5 has launched with a revamped visual identity. It all started with a clearly defined mission statement, focusing on reinstating whimsy and surprise into the identity while developing the grid and patterns developed in previous CS versions:

When we began thinking about what we wanted to do for CS5, the one thing we all agreed on was that we wanted to bring back a sense of joy to the brand work. Our goal was to move beyond the monolithic expression of of the CS3 and CS4 systems and create a more dynamic language. We wanted to bring back inspirational and aspirational artistic qualities to the identity system while leveraging the successful patterns we’ve established with CS3 and CS4. Everyone missed the more whimsical imagery that was such a big part of Adobe’s heritage and wanted to surprise and inspire our users and give them something new.

With some inspiration driven from the Olympic pictograms, Adobe created a simple but dynamic grid system on which to base the sub-identities of their product collection. Does it work? And will the brand hype live up to the reality of the tools?

Alumni time!

Gracing our presence in class today will be two alumni of the (formerly College of Human Ecology) graphic design program. Megan Drabandt, a designer for the Office of University Relations, and Rett Martin, a creative director at Clockwork, have taken time out of their day to check out your work and see what's going on in the CDes GD program. Hopefully, you're putting your best foot forward!

A GD Mural? Now that's awesome!

MuralTemplate2.pdf (160 KB)
(download)

The Graphic Design Student Association (GDSA) has secured permission and funding to paint a mural in the downstairs hallway of McNeal Hall. For those of you who don't know how big of a deal this is let me assure you – it's a pretty big deal. GDSA is looking for student input on what to paint in this 58' x 7' space. Use the attached template to sketch out some thoughts and ideas. Then return it in person to GDSA officer, Ian O'Neill OR put it in the GDSA mailbox in 240 McNeal Hall.

FYI: The mural will be painted this summer and they need volunteers for that too!
